CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
CARLYLE
“It’s better to go in naked,” he teased. I narrowed my eyes at him, but he didn’t actually seem to be joking. I shucked off my tank top and panties, tossing them back toward the sand, standing before him with my hands on my hips.
“Now what?”
“Take a deep breath - we have to do it underwater,” he warned. As soon as I filled my lungs, he tugged me beneath the surface. My eyes were closed tight against the sting of the salt, but I felt something like warm air nudging against my face. Droplets of water ran down my cheeks, as though there was a drain somewhere at the base of my neck. Something cinched around my neck, sticking like tape but not painful.
Toro squeezed my hands, and I cracked open an eye. I was definitely still underwater, but no water was touching my face.
Instead, an iridescent bubble of his lure magic rippled around my head, finally settling into a clear, soft-skinned globe, like a futuristic version of those old-fashioned diver helmets. I reached up to touch it, and my fingers slipped right through, the magic sealing around them like an unpoppable bubble.
So fucking cool. I grinned, suddenly more excited than nervous.
Toro tugged at my hand, his tail pushing against the water to lead us deeper. I kicked my legs, trying to follow him, ignoring what my instincts were screaming. Every bit of self-preservation was telling me not to swim too deep - that I would never make it back up before the air ran out. I gritted my teeth against it, though.
I trusted Toro. I could handle this, damn it.
The water around us grew darker, and the light from the sun above got smaller and smaller, until we finally reached a point where I could barely tell up from down. The sun was barely a pinpoint, and the only light was a soft, bioluminescent glow from Toro’s tail. I could barely see my own hand in front of my face.
Everywhere around me, beyond the arm’s length reach of Toro’s glow, was solid black and cool, even to my lure-warmed skin.
And I was officially losing the battle against panic.
Toro must have sensed it, or maybe it was because I was squeezing his hand hard enough to break bones, but he stopped trying to pull me deeper and turned back to fully face me. His luxurious tail moved in slow, lazy motions as we hovered in black nothingness.
He needed no bubble, of course, and he looked so exotic here, his dark skin nearly disappearing against the inky water.
Only his eyes and scales were bright jewels, like they were backlit by his magic. Barely visible but pulsing with power.
I clutched at his shoulders as an irrational fear washed over me. He could leave me here - swim away and vanish into the depths, taking his magical air bubble with him. I was completely and utterly at his mercy.
Every mermaid movie I’d ever seen, where the sirens lured their prey underwater to die, crowded into my brain.
